Chueca and its amazing atmosphere: this month we will discover this Barrio de Madrid. Have you enjoyed our last walk in Moncloa? Our column is back and today we are going in one of the most active and peculiar neighbourhoods of the city. We are in love with its streets and its little shops, so… let’s see if you like it, too!
For all the newcomers, let us explain briefly, what we will talk about in today’s blog post. Every month, we write a new post about the neighbourhoods in Madrid. This is our way to help you figuring out whether an area of the city is good for you or not. These blog posts are thought to support you during your flat hunting, one of the most complicated things to do when you have to move to a new city. helpMadrid will take care of you and will offer you nice shared flats to get settled in the beautiful Spanish capital.

We have descriptions of La Latina, Sol, Moncloa (particularly interesting if you are a student), Salamanca, Barrio de Las Letras, Lavapies and Malasaña… The only thing you have to do is reading and looking for your shared flat!
It is time to dive in and discover more about Chueca. This neighbourhood and its main square are named after the composer of zarzuelas and author Federico Chueca. This neighbourhood of downtown Madrid is also known as the district where the LGBT movement has begun in the Spanish capital. Should we have a walk in the lovely streets of this neighbourhood?
There are two main attractions in this neighbourhood. The first one is the Romantic Museum where take place several exhibitions and where are preserved some pieces by the leading artists of the time. Located in an 18th century palace, this museum captures all the Romantic essence… Our favourite items? China and furniture, of course!
This is our favourite section ahahah. Kidding aside, Chueca is the perfect place to spend your free time. First, it is very close to several escape rooms (we will post something about them soon; stay tuned). Cafes and restaurants are everywhere: they are all extremely cool and, believe us, it will be hard to choose one of them. Another great way to spend your evening is the Mercado de San Antòn: several small restaurants all under the same roof and a beautiful rooftop to enjoy the beautiful Madrid’s sunsets. Something that you have to taste is the Vermut in one of the oldest bar in Chueca square. Do not underestimate the flavoured pop corns, too. Last point, shopping: there many boutiques and small shops that offer good quality products and original design items. (We could go on for ages, but we guess we have made our point.
It is difficult to know where to start. Let’s keep it simple and let’s talk about the public transports. Right in the middle of the district, you will have the chance to see the Chueca metro station. Well-connected and close to other major stations, you will certainly do not have any problem to go wherever you want. Moreover, being so central, you may not need to take the public transports at all. What about all the other services? Post offices, banks, supermarkets, restaurant… All you need is there! Besides the small Carrefour express and Dia, there is the San Anton market where you can buy fresh and local products (inside the market, there is a supermarket, too).
