Barrio Chamberí

Barrio Chamberí

Hola readers,

Want to know one of the most fashionable neighbourhoods for dining out? Well, today we talk about barrio Chamberí, a place in continuous evolution, characterised by stylish and aristocratic residences and cultural venues, but also traditional taverns and restaurants.

Before starting our walk through the streets of Chamberí, let’s have a little refresher about this barrios column and why we started to talk about the several and different neighborhoods of Madrid.
Born more than one year ago with its first post about the quite popular Malasaña, this neighbourhood column offers to our readers  the chance to get to know all the areas in Madrid: from Malasaña to La Latina, from Lavapies to Chueca, from Las Letras to Salamanca, and then Sol, Moncloa, Arganzuela and Los Austrias. helpMadrid would like to provide students and young workers who decide to move to Madrid with information about this incredible city; that’s why we have collected the most important info and divided the post into small sections: the first one with a little brief overview about the district; the second one about cultural attractions; the third one is about some tips to enjoy the free time in the area; and the last section describes the services at your disposal.

You should afterwards be able to look for your accommodation in the city, choosing among the several shared flats that helpMadrid provides you with. You could wonder “why a shared flat?”, well, first it’s way more affordable than other kind of accommodations, second - and most important point -, you will meet new people from different countries and this will let you learn new things, new languages, new lifestyles, new cultures...and you will collect unique memories that will last forever!

Okay, it’s now time to have our walk through the beautiful barrio Chamberí. This is one of the most typical and madrileños neighbourhoods of Madrid, the perfect place for the ones who want to enjoy the authentic (and less touristy) life in the city. This central area is full of small shops, traditional tapas restaurant where the locals round up and it’s divided into two souls: the popular and young one and the posh part, the one close to barrio Salamanca.

Monuments and museums

Chamberí hosts one of the most important centers of the Jewish Community of Madrid - founded in 1917 - , therefore, you can admire the city’s main synagogue, Bet Kneset Bet Yaacov, within the center of the nighbourhood.
Keep going on with your walk and you’ll be able to visit the Museo Joaquín Sorolla, the museum dedicated to the Valencian artist, whose widow decided to donate her patrimony to the Spanish government in order to fund a museum in his memory. Built in his old house and workshop, the museum hosts a beautiful patio with incredible fountains and tiles.
Thirdly, the important Estacion Fantasma, also called Anden Cero, the historical station closed in the 60’s, then reopened in 2008 after some makeover works and turned into a museum with old ticket offices, turnstiles, maps and a video about the construction of the Metro.

Free time

You can’t miss the heart of this barrio: Plaza de Chamberí, a meeting place for the locals, with a playground and a lot of spaces where to sit and chill.
Then, for some grocery shopping, Mercado de Chamberí is the perfect place to run into a wide range of fresh and high-quality products. You can also find a gym in here (not to make people feel guilty about food, lol), provided of a beautiful swimming pool on the first floor.

Services

Talking about the daily life in here, Chamberí seems to be the perfect neighbourhood where to live: full of life, walkable, with a great atmosphere and where you can find all the services you need: pharmacy, banks, ATM, supermarkets… and many others. About the public transportation, you can easily reach every place you want: several metro stations (Quevedo, Alonso Martinez, Iglesia) or you can easily get around with electric scooters, bikes or by foot.

We hope you enjoyed our walk through barrio Chamberí, an incredible neighbourhood that we love and where you can look for our flats: it’s still central and well-connected to any place, but a little far from the most crowded areas of the city.
