How many stadiums are there in Madrid?

How many stadiums are there in Madrid? The answer is… several. Today we will get around the three most important stadiums in Madrid. Football lovers, are you ready? Our column “Getting around” is getting very interesting, a good reason to keep following us and wait for the next post in our column.

So, stadiums, right? As mentioned above, we will talk about the history and the features of three stadiums located in Madrid. All of you know perfectly the name of the stadiums I am talking about. The old Calderon, the famous Bernabeu and the brand new Wanda Metropolitano (not that new, by the way): today, with helpMadrid, you will visit these three stadiums.

Do you live close to one of these stadiums? The location of your shared flat has to be strategic also in term of football. Watching the match in your room or in the living room with your flat mates is not the same as watching it in a stadium, with millions of other supporters. Even if you are not a supporter and you do not like football, you will enjoy watching the match in a stadium. By choosing a shared flat close to it, you will have no problems reaching it and enjoying the match. Guaranteed by helpMadrid (imagine to see here an emoji winking at you).

Have you made yourself at home? Do you? Perfect! Our descriptions of the three major stadiums in Madrid are ready…

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

Let’s begin with the oldest stadium, that, by coincidence, is also the one with the highest seating capacity (81044 seats). Seventy-one years ago opened the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and, since 1947, it is the home stadium of Real Madrid.

Location: Chamartín district.

Curious facts:

  • The first player to score in the new stadium was Sabino Barinaga.
  • It is the first Stadium in Europe to host a Copa Libertadores final.

Vicente Calderón Stadium

This stadium unfortunately has been active only for 51 years (1966-2017) and hosted the Atletico Madrid. Smaller that the Bernabéu, it is located though in a spectacularly beautiful area, close to both Madrid Rio and the Royal Palace. As it is going to be demolished (unless a change of plans), we kindly suggest you to have a tour of this historical stadium.

Location: Arganzuela district.

Curious facts:

  • The M-30 dual carriageway passes below a part of the stadium
  • It has hosted 14 Copa del Rey finals.

Metropolitano Stadium

This is the most recent stadium: built for the first time in 1994, it has been renovated and re-opened in 2017. It is the home stadium of Atletico Madrid and, therefore, has become one of the most famous stadiums in Madrid and, possibly, in Spain.

Location: San Blas-Canillejas district.

Curious facts:

  • It changed name several times and today it is called Wanda Metropolitano, due to its sponsor.
  • Originally, it has been built to host the World Athletics Championship in 1997. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned.

Do you root for Real Madrid or Atletico? Do you like Wanda Metropolitano or you wish you had the chance to enjoy watching a match in the monumental Calderon? It is hard to decide. Therefore, we will not speak out. By the way, we will certainly make a guided tour of these three stadiums. Will you join us?

As said before, watching a match in a stadium is not the same as watching it at home. Nevertheless, we are often too lazy to go out, reach the stadium and then going back home. The location of the shared flat motivate us to do it and this is the reason why helpMadrid shares constantly with you information about the neighbourhoods and the attractions in Madrid. Besides suggesting you the shared flat as dreamy housing solution, we provide you with the information you need to make the right choice when it comes to the location.
