You might’ve noticed the same sculpture all around Madrid: same form, different decorations. They came up nearly unannounced and they are everywhere. You’ll have wondered why …
The 90 sculptures that have conquered the city centre are inspired by the painting “Las Meninas” (The ladies-in-waiting) by Diego Velazquez and they are a tribute to the diversity and freedom of expression. The Meninas are part of the outdoor exhibition “Meninas Madrid Gallery” (15th April- 15th July), a project entrusted to the Italian artist Antonio Azzato. Artists, actors, athletes and even a torero (bullfighter) have decorated them and some are definitely super cool!
You cannot miss … The Menina entitled “Susurros de piedra” in the Buen Retiro Park (Puerta de Felipe IV) decorated by Fernando Manso and the one in Plaza Mayor entitled “La menina Postal” decorated by Luigi Rodriguez.
