What you cannot miss in March

What you cannot miss in March means… A new agenda for all our beloved reader. March means that winter is ending, too. How do you feel about it? We are actually a little bit sad because we really like staying at home with a blanket and a warm cup of tea. By the way, there are more than 20 days left… Let’s enjoy these last “icy” days and let’s prepare to welcome this spring properly!

Positivity and optimism, this is our mood do begin a brand new monthly adventure with you. We have selected for all of you many events and some favourites that will become yours, too. Something tasty, a nice trip, page turning books and entertaining TV series.

Before these juicy plans, we should begin with our suggestions regarding:

  1. Type of accommodation
  2. Location of the accommodation

Suggestion number one. If you are still looking for an accommodation in Madrid or if you are planning to move there soon, shared flats are the perfect housing solution for students and young workers. We have already talked about this topic several times. Therefore, we just leave here the link of the blog post.

Suggestion number two. Do not choose random locations just because prices seem to be lower. Of course, have a look at the price, too; however, value the location according to some criteria such as services, public transports, closeness to the city centre and quality of life. In this respect, helpMadrid may be extremely helpful. We have selected some of the most liveable areas of Madrid and we have described their main features for you. Here the link of the last blog post related to Barrio Chueca.

So, it looks like we are ready to begin an amazing March together. Let’s prepare one of the last hot chocolate cups of the season and let’s take a load off… Amazing plans are yet to come!

 Events and more

Until May_Balthus: the exhibiton hosted by the Thyssen Museum is focused on one of the great masters of the 20th century, Balthasar Klossowski de Rola. Directly from the webpage of the museum: “His particular pictorial language, with its use of solid forms and strongly defined outlines, combines the procedures of the Old Masters with certain aspects of Surrealism.”

Until 10 March_Festival Internacional de la Magia: experience magic during the 9th edition of this unbelievable festival. We suggest you to check the programme and enjoy one of the shows… It will take your breath away.

28 Marche-5 May_Mr Dalloway: let’s talk about theatre and let’s talk about an amazing work by Virginia Wolf. This novel performed on a stage details a day of the high-society woman Clarissa Dalloway. This show may be worth a little bit of your time.

13 March_Slash: the lead guitarist of the Guns N’ Roses will play as soloist in Madrid. If you are lucky enough, you will still find tickets to listen to this great artist. This is something that you cannot miss.

 March Favourites

To eat

  • Casa Gonzalez: if you need some tasty and high quality Spanish food, you are looking for this restaurant. Great cheese, good ham and many dishes that will make your mouth water. The location is typical and the atmosphere is welcoming. Probably those are the reason why it is always crowded. Perfect for a tapa and a glass of wine or for a dinner with some of your friends, we suggest you this place to spend a nice and Spanish evening. Personal suggestion, the wild boar casserole is delicious.

To watch

  • The Kid: Charlie Chaplin will never let you down and this movie is so funny and touching, that we had to put in our favourites list: as said, some paragraphs above, positivity and optimism. To sum up in few world, a tramp, Charlot, finds an abandoned baby and adopt him. We do not want to spoiler anything so… just watch the first full-length movie directed by Charlie Chaplin and let us know if it made you laugh and cry at the same time.
  • Westworld: thank you Jonathan! Thank you Lisa! Thank you HBO! No, we are not crazy; they are the creators and the producer of one of the most entertaining series we have ever seen. Great direction, great plot and great locations. We wish we could tell you more about this science fiction, but we do not want to ruin one of its strengths, the twists and turns.

To read

  • The importance of being Earnest by Oscar Wilde: this farce is hilarious and extremely interesting; we would define it as brilliant. It is one of the most popular works of the author and it depicts the importance of institutions like marriage during the Victorian age with a satiric accent. Enjoy a pleasant evening (it is so short that it will not take more than an evening to read it) with Jack, Gwendolen and Cecily… (EN)
  • Don Quijote by Cervantes: this month we go for some classics of literature. The title is actually much longer than this, but we have opted for the short version. This comic and tragic novel is one of the foundations of modern literature and the language is quite difficult, therefore, if you decide to read it in Spanish, be sure that your level is high enough. Are you ready to discover the Mancha with the noble Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza? (ES)

 To visit

  • Valencia: this month we will go together in Valencia to visit our partners. We are kidding. Valencia is one of the most important Spanish cities and, besides tasting paella, you can do many interesting things. One of the places that you have to visit is the City of Arts and Science, a breath taking architectonical ensemble of museums and forums. Why have we selected a city far from Madrid? Because March is the month of an iconic event, Las Fallas (10-19 March). To celebrate the end of winter, each neighbourhood creates giant paper figures that will be burned during La Cremá. In this respect, we suggest you to have a look at the trips organized by Citylife Madrid: they organize two trips to Valencia, one on 16-17 and the other on 18-19 March. Do not miss the chance to experience one of the greatest Spanish events of the year! Check this link and book your trip!

So, what do you think about our plans and our agenda? From the concerts to the Don Quixote, there is no way you will get bored in March. Moreover, spring is coming! Isn’t that a good reason to be happy? Even though we are autumn and winter lovers, we cannot wait to go jogging in the park or having a picnic with our friends.

We have begun our blog post with positivity and optimism. Let’s end it with the same good mood… gather your flatmates and, instead of spending your evening in your shared flat (we know it is cosy and it is still cold outside), go out and enjoy one of the weekly events by Citylife Madrid. Or, stay in your shared flat and plan your next trip with them. It is up to you! In any case, enjoy your stay in Madrid and in Spain.

We wish you an exciting and unforgettable March!

Yours helpMadrid team
