The Metro de Madrid

The Metro de Madrid

We are not directly related to this company and the information may change over time. They have been collected by helpAccommodation.

The "Metro de Madrid" is one of the main public transports of the city: 12 lines and 300 stations, a great network that connects the entire city centre and the suburbs. If you decide to live in this charming city, you’ll use it a lot and it is important that you’re well informed about the lines and their stations.

If you’re lucky enough, you will read this article before looking for your new room. Use our little post to identify the line that interests you the most! By renting a room close to a metro station, your displacements will be easier and quicker. Do not underestimate the importance of the public transports. If your shared flat is close to one or several stations, it will be easier to join your friends in the evening, you’ll be likely not to arrive late at meetings, you will not lose time…

So many advantages and so little effort. The only thing that you have to do is to collect information (we simplify this task by providing you some links and assistance) and choose thelocation of the accommodation (we have already selected some of the best housing solutions; have a look at our offer!).

Before starting our “metro lines’ description”, let’s take a step back and have a look at the history of the Metro de Madrid. The project was the designed by the engineers Carlos Mendoza, Antonio Gonzalez Echarte y Miguel Otamendi. In 1919, King Alfonso XIII inaugurated the first line: it was 3.48 km long and connected Puerta del Sol and Cuatro Caminos. Everything started with 8 stations and since that moment the development of this mean of transportations increased significantly. Where did we end up? To 12 efficient lines that will bring us from one end of Madrid to the other, from 6.00 AM to 1.30 AM every day of the year.

Culture and secret treasures

The Metro de Madrid offers this and much more. Actually, some stations has a free library lending service called “Bibliometro”. Chamartin, Nuevos Ministerios, Embajadores, Moncloa, Legazpi are some of the stations that offer this service that promotes culture and literature. This is a great idea, isn’t it? Have a look at the catalogue and find your next reading.

Another interesting initiative are the Andén 0 the suburban museums. The first one is a project that shows the history of the railway in Madrid. When it comes to the museums, there are three interesting options: the Canos del Peral Museum, the Paleontological site at Carpetana Station and the Old Forecourt of Pacifico Station. This is actually something new for us, too. Nonetheless, they seem to be extremely interesting and they are surely worth a visit… we will let you know!

Metro de Madrid

It is time now to uncover all the lines and their most important stations. Are you ready?

LINE 1_ This line connects Pinar de Chamartin and Valdecarros and it stops in some of the most important part of the city centre. Plaza de Castilla is an important economic centre, Tribunal has connections for the Airport,Gran Via and Sol are the two of the main stations in the city centre, Atocha has the main train station of the city, Las Suertes has IKEA, etc. This is definitely one of the best lines of the Metro: as you can see, it perfectly connects the major travel hubs.

LINE 2_ This line connects Las Rosas and Cuatro Caminos. Some of its most important stops are Retiro, Sevilla, Sol, Opera and Cuatro Caminos.

LINE 3_ This line connects Villaverde Alto and Moncloa (important station if you’re a student). Remember this line, if you need to go in Plaza de Espana, Callao, Sol, Lavapiés or Embajadores.

LINE 4_ This line connects Argüelles and Pinar de Chamartin and Serrano, Colón, Goya, Bilbao are some of its most central stops.

LINE 5_ This line connects Alameda de Osuna and Casa de Campo through Alonso Martinez, Chueca, Gran Via, Callao, Opera, La Latina, Puerta de Toledo, etc. This line is of paramount importance, too. You’ll use this line many times, as it connects many central neighbourhoods

LINE 6_ This is the circular and coast down the centre of Madrid. The most important station of this line? Nuevos Ministerios, where you meet the line 8 to go to the airport.

LINE 7_ This line connects the Estadio Metropolitano and Pitis.

LINE 8_ Finally, our favourite line: it connects the airport and Nuevos Ministerios. Other important stations in between are Feria de Madrid and Barajas, that is actually like a small town close to Madrid. Worth a visit?

LINE 9_ This line connects Paco de Lucia and Puerta de Arganda.

LINE 10_ This line connects Tres Olivos and Puerta del Sur. If you like football, you have to write down this line and the stadium station: Santiago Bernabeu! Whether you like football or not, take a note, because it connects some of the most important part of the city, too.

LINE 11 and LINE 12_ These line connect respectively Plaza Eliptica and La Fortuna, and Puerta del Sur and San Nicasio. They are less important than the other ones, but it may happen that you need to take them once!

Was it helpful? You may need a map in order to orient yourself in all these lines, stations, connections, etc.

Ticket and memberships

Before we say goodbye, you have to be informed about the tickets, the fares, the memberships, etc. A single trip ticket costs 1,50 euros, but the price may vary according to the area that you have to reach. There are eight main zones: Zona A, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, E, E2. If you need to go to the airport, there is an supplement of 3 euros to add to the ticket price.

When it comes to the memberships, you have many options. Ingeneral, one month of membership with the Public Transport Card has two main prices. If you’re under 26, the price for a monthly membership is 20 euros. If you’re not “young” anymore, the monthly membership costs a little bit more (54,60 euros).

For further information, please check carefully the website and go in one of the many info points if you have any doubt.

Our suggestions? No matter what, try to find your room or flat close to a station of the most useful line (according to your needs). One change is better the two and no changes at all are even better. As we have already advised in several of our articles, the location of your accommodation is super important, especially when you live in a big city like Madrid. If you choose the wrong neighbourhood, you may need more than our hour to go to the university or to go to work.

Now you are a pro of the metro of Madrid and you will enjoy your stay in this beautiful city even more. You will discover the most beautiful and curious corners of Madrid, street art and tasty restaurants. Everything is closer with the right mean of transportation!
